Less than 24 hours after being ported to iPhone and iPad, Steamworld Heist, which first hit Steam earlier this year, Image and Form’s 2D tactical Role-Playing Game (RPG), has been received with great fanfare. This strategy-oriented space shooter has a simple premise: skill, not chance, determines success. Rather than relying on to-hit percentages and character statistics like RPGs in the past, such as Fallout 2 and X-com, Steamworld Heist places players in total control, allowing them to precisely aim their shots. By utilising the 2D environment, players can take cover, make ricochet shots, and outmanoeuvre the opposition.
Despite the focus on player skill rather than statistics, there are still abilities and different weapon types which are better suited for different scenarios. Steamworld Heist also features procedurally generated levels and five difficulty tiers, giving this wacky robots-in-space RPG a great deal of replay value.
Steamworld Heist is available in English, Russian, French, Italian, German, and Spanish, for $6.99 USD on iPhone and iPad, $19.99 USD on Steam, Wii U, PlayStation Vita, and Nintendo 3DS. The PlayStation Vita and Wii U both share the prestige of being in Metacritic’s Top 5 Games and the Steam version has a 98% recommendation rate. For more information, see the trailer below.
