Riot Games has been teasing it for weeks now and finally their new champion, Ivern, has entered Summoner’s Rift for the first time.  The Friend of the Forest is now available to play in the PBE (Player Beta Environment) for a select few players, and he’s already mixing up how players interact with the jungle creatures on the map.

As you can probably tell, Ivern is a friend to the monsters inhabiting the jungle on Summoner’s Rift, so he’s not really going to be stomping around and slaying them.  Indeed, Ivern’s passive ability is Friend of the Forest and it means that he can neither damage nor take damage from non-epic monsters on the map, which includes every monster except Baron, the Rift Herald, Drakes, and the Elder Dragon.

This new mechanic means that he has a new way of clearing neutral monster camps.  Instead of traditional damage, Ivern plants groves which grow around the monster camp and, once complete, he can clear the wave and control which player on his team receives the buff (if there is one).

Ivern’s remaining abilities are a mix of the mundane and interesting.  He has a stock-standard snare and shield which take up two of his ability slots, but it’s his second ability, Brushmaker, which has the most potential.  The Friend of the Forest is able to spawn bushes that last for 30 seconds.  In League of Legends, bushes grant enemies within them invisibility from enemies not within them and are integral to the playstyle of every champion.

Ivern League of LegendsHis ultimate, Daisy!, is very similar to Annie’s in that it spawns a huge sentinel which the player can control.  If the Sentinel is able to attack the same unit three times, it will produce a special knock-up attack.

We’ve all heard Ivern’s wise voice in the jungle across the last few weeks and now we can watch some of the lucky players take him onto the Rift in the League of Legends PBE.  Soon he will be available to the general public as Riot Games release their first champion since the anti-climactic Kled in August.

Will be you burning through your points to buy Ivern as soon as he drops in League of Legends?
